The Cui Yongping Shadow Puppetry Art Museum, established in 2004, is a specialized thematic museum committed to the collection and preservation of shadow puppetry. This unique institution boasts an impressive collection of ancient shadow puppetry heads, offering visitors a glimpse into the invention and creation process of this art form, which dates back over 2,000 years. With over 500 distinctive shadow puppetry heads adorned with helmets and hair, the museum provides a comprehensive exploration of the art.
The museum is organized into various sections, each focusing on different aspects of shadow puppetry. These include an introduction to production procedures, an art display, historical materials, performance props, scripts, and performance techniques. It holds an extensive collection of over 30,000 items and showcases more than 10,000 pieces. Among these are works from the Ming and Qing Dynasties, the Anti-Japanese War period, and pieces with distinct characteristics from regions such as Hebei, Shandong, Sichuan, and Shaanxi. Additionally, the museum features works designed and produced by Cui Yongping himself.
The themes of the shadow puppetry collected span a wide range, encompassing historical romances, folk legends, fairy tale fables, and modern stories. Some well-known examples include the tales of the twelve female generals of the Yang family conquering the west, the 108 heroes of the Water Margin, Tang Seng and his disciples, the twelve beauties of “Dream of the Red Chamber,” and the “Legend of the White Snake.”
The museum is open to the public from 09:00 to 18:00 every day from January 1st to December 31st. For visitors’ convenience, a parking lot is available, with the number of spaces subject to the actual situation of the community.Toilet: Inside the scenic area.
